Held annually in Decorah, Iowa, the Institute offers an immersive experience centered on small-ensemble playing, daily rehearsals, and professional coaching. Participants are assigned to chamber groups and receive individualized instruction from members of Quartet Winneshiek, all of whom are professional performers and experienced teachers.
In addition to coaching and reading sessions, the Institute includes open rehearsals, public performances, and opportunities for participants to share their work with the community. DCMI culminates in showcase concerts that are free and open to the public.
Community Connection
Coachings and rehearsals take place at Decorah High School, providing focused, well-equipped spaces for daily ensemble work. An informal outreach “run-out” concert will be held at Impact Coffee, connecting participants with the local community in a relaxed setting. The Institute concludes with a final concert at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah, a warm and acoustically welcoming venue for chamber music.
Personalized Instruction
As a quartet, we work collaboratively to select repertoire that fits each ensemble’s level, interests, and goals. We plan our coaching and rehearsals together, drawing on our shared experience to support each group’s musical growth. Our aim is to create an engaging, supportive process that leads to confident, joyful performances.
Flexible Schedule
Each day includes scheduled coachings in both the morning and afternoon with members of Quartet Winneshiek, along with optional time for ensembles to rehearse on their own. One evening during the week will feature a masterclass, with all groups invited to observe and participate. On Friday evening, participants will share their work in an informal outreach concert at Impact Coffee. The Institute concludes with final performances at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah, open to the public.
